Say the word Marshall and an immediate image of the black and gold amplifiers springs to mind, the great British manufacturing success and global icon that has shaped the sound of blues, rock and heavy metal from the 1960s to the present day. Now Terry Marshall (son of the legendary Jim Marshall OBE, who died in 2012) steps onto the studio floor himself, accompanied by a selection of his many musical friends. Blues In Britain’s Liz Medhurst was invited to Marshall HQ in Bletchley, near Milton Keynes to spend some time with the one and only Terry Marshall.
What better way to cheer up a cold, rainy April day than to get a bit of Spanish sunshine, even if it’s merely the distant glow on Zoom as Blues In Britain chats to the friendly Spanish blues musician Susan Santos, talking from her home in Madrid. Her new album Sonora is her sixth studio release, coming out in early April. Simon Green talks to the Hot Rod Lady.
Mention Dan Patlansky’s name in blues circles and you can pretty much guarantee a positive response, even by those who are only familiar with his reputation. And there’s a string of accolades and awards to bear this out. The South African singer, songwriter and Stratocaster devotee is back with a change of direction but thankfully remains as potent as ever. Ahead of his imminent UK tour, Patlansky talks to Blues In Britain about his new album, Movin’ On.
It’s an accepted fact that wolves became extinct in Britain sometime in the 16th century. However, it seems one or two may have survived, because today there’s a Big Wolf, alive and well, stalking the streets of Birmingham. Over the years, the Big Wolf Band has gathered momentum and a large following, gaining nominations for the UK Blues Federation Awards. But it hasn’t always been easy and, for lead singer and guitarist Jonathan Earp it’s been a journey on which he’s endured physical and mental health problems, as he tells Graham Munn.
Sean Webster‘s life changed dramatically many moons ago when a friend introduced him to the music of the blues greats. The Three Kings: Albert, B.B. and Freddy, and on to Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Gary Moore and the legendary Eric Clapton. Sean’s passion for guitar and his dedication to music since has continued to grow and he’s released a catalogue of studio albums that have enhanced his reputation and grown his fan base. Simon Green talks to Sean at his home in The Netherlands.
Formed in Cheshire in 2016, the Gus Glynn Band released its debut album Daylight in 2018 with a follow-up Echo The Hollow at the tail end of 2021. But the band’s third album, Paint It Blue, finds this intriguing power trio hitting its stride with an album expanding its dynamic range, exploring hard, sixties-influenced blues and rock that bristles with an almost post-punk rawness.
