Issue 269: May 2024
Troy Redfern’s busy 2023 touring schedule did nothing to hurt or impair the guitarist’s growing popularity. It simply enhanced what a lot of people already knew: Redfern is a dynamic live performer and building on 2022’s The Wings Of Salvation, his new album Invocation is set to further cement his artistic reputation. Speaking from his home in a converted 17th century barn, he takes a break from recording a slide tutorial for Guitar Techniques to talk to Simon Green.
Formerly of Squeeze and awarded an OBE in 2003, Jools Holland is recognised as one of the finest musicians and broadcasters of his era, a pianist, bandleader, singer and composer. He’s recorded well over thirty albums in a long career, but this spring his collaboration with Rod Stewart, recorded with his own Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, Swing Fever, became his first ever UK number one album. Holland discusses the album with David Robinson.
A bluesman whose first instrument is the drums: just one of the many contrasts that play out in Kate Pieroudis’ contemplative dialogue with Cedric Burnside, an artist descended from blues royalty, rhythms having passed from his grandfather, the pioneering guitarist RL Burnside. The coiling Mississippi river and northern Mississippi hills form the backdrop to his latest album, Hill Country Love.
The Grammy-nominated Bob Corritore is rightly considered amongst the top traditional blues harmonica players on the planet. The owner of the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, the radio host of Those Lowdown Blues on KJZZ Radio, founder of the Southwest Musical Arts Foundation, an official endorser of Hohner harmonicas and an award-winner with Keeping The Blues Alive and Living Blues, Corritore is clearly a man busy with the blues.
It’s hard to believe it‘s been almost twenty-seven years since the world lost Luther Allison, but fortunately, Bernard Allison (his son and band leader who learned from his father and has had himself a three decade career rooted in the blues) is keeping Luther’s legacy alive. He talks to Steve Morphew about his latest album Luther’s Blues, a remixed and remastered collection of his father’s songs that have appeared on his own albums throughout the years.
Paul and Matthew Long, members of the blues powerhouse Catfish, share an unbreakable bond as father and son. Their journey however, has been marked by more than just familial and musical milestones. Both Paul and Matt have been undergoing individual battles with cancer, and the past year has posed unprecedented challenges with treatment limiting the band’s live performances. But despite the turbulent seas they’ve navigated, the band remains very much a focal point for Matt and Paul, as they explain to Chris Griffiths.
Off The Page finds us in the good company of Jesse Dayton, Sarah Jane Morris, Evan Nicole Bell, Francesca Shaw and David Evans. Pete Clack, Russ Cottee, Steve Morphew and Clive Richardson talk to five pivotal figures on the UK and international blues scenes.
PLUS: we look back at February’s brilliant UK Blues, Rhythm & Rock Festival, Joe Bonamassa was at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall, there’s your monthly gig and album reviews, Becc’s Blues by Rebecca Downes, Out & About, the IBBA chart and much more.
