The Commoners are on track for another momentous year with the release of their highly anticipated third album, Restless. UK audiences had several opportunities to catch the Canadian band during 2023 as they toured in support to Troy Redfern and Samantha Fish & Jesse Dayton, while promoting their critically acclaimed sophomore album Find A Better Way. Singer Chris Medhurst talks to Simon Green about the new album and just what makes this special band tick.

There are blues/rock supergroups, and there is Black Country Communion. Since their inception fifteen years ago, the band has been heartily embraced by the blues and the rock world in equal measure. It’s been a long wait but album number five, the fittingly named V, is here. And so is legendary bassist and lead vocalist Glenn Hughes, in conversation with Blues In Britain’s Liz Medhurst.

From The Heart: Marcus King has spoken openly about his struggles with depression and substance and alcohol abuse before, to the extent that he wasn’t sure he’d be around to record another album after 2022’s Young Blood.  Happily, he’s just released a stunning new album Mood Swings, produced by Rick Rubin, and in a candid and thoughtful interview, the talented young musician from South Carolina talks to Simon Green.

The brand new Krissy Matthews & Friends record is a monster, a 24-track collection of vibrant originals and sparkling versions of some of the British Norwegian guitarist’s favourite covers. Released in May, it’s his second album for Ruf Records and one which took over a year to produce. Not surprising really, when you factor in the eighty-odd singers and musicians he enlisted for the record and the fact that it’s nearly three hours long. “I owe a lot of people a sh**load of favours!” Krissy tells Blues In Britain.

Signing with Los Angeles-based label Cleopatra Records early in his career might have seemed like lift-off for Rotherham’s Tom Killner, but all that glitters doesn’t necessarily turn to gold and the 28-year old vocalist and guitar-player has had to surf the highs and lows of being an independent musician, culminating in this year’s splendid Borrowed Time album. Resilient and grounded, Killner has an old head on young shoulders.

Ramblin’ Preachers have swiftly become a standout act on the UK’s live music scene over the past two years. Since their formation in 2019, this formidable Milton Keynes-based quartet has been captivating audiences with dynamic performances and their distinctive southern-flavoured sound. Chris Griffiths goes the distance.

The very idea of a list of 30 Blues Songs You Should Hear is preposterous – there are thousands of blues songs you should hear! But everyone loves a list, and we’re no exception! Here’s thirty to be going on with – not the only thirty you should hear, nor especially the greatest thirty ever recorded, or the thirty that have been covered most – just thirty really fabulous blues songs that Blues In Britain’s very own “font of all knowledge” Trevor Hodgett considers the thirty blues songs that listening to will immeasurably enhance your life.

Off The Page this month finds us in the good company of two bass-players, Danielle Nicole and Chris Bevington, the legendary Bobby Whitlock and new country/roots sensations, The Red Clay Strays.

PLUS: we review the new Chris FarloweStormy Monday: The Blues Year 1985-2008’ set, the 50th Anniversary box reissue of Robin Trower’s legendary ‘Bridge Of Sighs’, and ‘Tranmissions Live’, the recently-issued 6-disc DVD and CD collection by Stone The Crows. There’s your monthly gig and album reviews, Becc’s Blues by Rebecca Downes, Out & About, the IBBA chart and lots more.
