Among the green hills overlooking the valley of the River Finn outside the town of Ballybofey in County Donegal, Muireann Bradley grew up steeped in the old tunes of the great blues men and women who were making records in the 1920s and 1930s. Her father began teaching her guitar when she was just nine, acoustic fingerpicking country, piedmont and ragtime blues styles, and since appearing on BBC’s Jools Holland’s Annual Hootenanny on New Year’s Eve 2023, a few weeks after her seventeenth birthday, Bradley has become a sensation, headlining concerts in Ireland, England and Europe, receiving ecstatic reviews for her debut album I Kept These Old Blues. Her influences include Blind Blake, Rev. Gary Davis, Memphis Minnie, Elizabeth Cotton, Mississippi John Hurt and Stefan Grossman and she talks to Blues In Britain’s Trevor Hodgett.

Jimmie Vaughan is The Stratocaster Master, the four-time  Grammy-winning blues vocalist and guitarist who is as recognisable for his sleek appearance and Fender Stratocaster as he is for his enviable flair and tone. An original in the truest sense of the word, Vaughan doesn’t play like any other musician, being an unexpected and bold innovator, and that’s where his conversation with David Robinson begins.

UK audiences were mightily impressed by the New Orleans-inspired blues soul of Canadian band, Bywater Call when they toured here last year. Since then the band has been touring virtually non-stop, building up to the August release of their new album, Shepherd. Simon Green caught up with powerhouse vocalist, Meghan Parnell, as the band prepared to leave Toronto for the two-day drive south to begin another U.S. tour.

It’s been another good year for Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown: the Nashville-based roots rockers have released their sixth full-length album Electrified, they’re flourishing on their own independent label and congratulations are in order as we can now address the main man as the “Grammy award-winning Tyler Bryant” after the win for Larkin Poe’s Blood Harmony which bore his production stamp. Liz Medhurst plugs her fingers into the Shakedown socket.

Kentucky’s Mojo Thunder are among the latest in a crop of brilliant new bands encompassing the rich musical heritage of Southern rock, merging it with a blues-based rock’n’roll spirit. The Infinite Hope is the band’s new album and they talk to Liz Medhurst.

Chicago, 9th June 2024: the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Millenium Park, The Chicago Blues Festival. Steve Morphew is on the trail of the one and only Buddy Guy on the latest leg of his Damn Right farewell tour, in tandem with Buddy’s drummer, songwriting partner and long-time friend Tom Hambridge. (Plus: festival overview by Eddie Soye).

High Hopes this month finds us in the company of The Jake Leg Jug Band, Chris Wragg and Greg Copeland and Darnell Cole & The Vibe and we talk toBob Harris and Colin Hall about The Beatles And The Blues, Robert Hokum chats to Paul Cook of UBAS Records and there’s Jamie White’s essay on the legendary Blind Willie McTell, plus Reconsider Baby, Black Deer Festival photoshoot, album and gig reviews and much more!
