Issue 278: February 2025
Michael Jackson will always be a foundational part of Orianthi’s rise as one of the planet’s premiere electric guitarists. Hired for the This Is It concert series, it proved a launching pad for a solo career that’s built upon the guitarist’s incredible musicianship, and now she delivers her ‘First Time Blues’ ahead of a 2025 album release with Woodward Avenue Records. Never losing sight of her solo career, it marks a return to an organic ‘60s and ‘70s blues rock vibe, as she explains to David Robinson.
Greg Coulson is the very epitome of a world-class musician, an expressive singer-songwriter and a dynamic performer who blends the blues with soul and the rhythmic grooves of funk and jazz. It’s all captured effortlessly by his dynamic keyboard-playing and in his soulful vocal delivery, and delivered to great effect on his new EP, Live At Crescent Records Studio.
Travellers In Time: Mick Box and K.K. Downing are stalwarts of the British hard rock and heavy metal scenes, Box as the renowned lead guitarist and one of the main songwriters for Uriah Heep (the only member from its beginnings in 1969 to still be active within the group) and Downing with Judas Priest, the band he achieved huge success with from the early days in 1968 until his departure in 2011.They talk to Blues In Britain about their early days in music and how the blues shaped their development as guitarists.
It’s now more than sixty years since the ground-breaking slide guitarist Elmore James died from a heart attack at the tragically early age of forty-five. Writer, author and musician John Phillpott looks back at James’ life, his recording history, and the unique stylistic legacy that influenced countless blues guitarists down the decades.
It’s a family affair when Luke Andrew Edwards, vocalist, guitarist and the main songwriter in L.A. Edwards, talks to Simon Green. Born the second of seven children growing up in a deeply religious household, there were no memories of road trips listening to classic rock on FM radio or watching concerts on television. He and his siblings were cloistered from popular culture, musical listening experiences coming instead from hymnals and classical music on cassette tapes borrowed from the local library. It’s quite a back story.
As a founding member of The Doors, Robby Krieger intuitively understands the beauty of free-flowing collaboration and telepathic group interplay. This is evident on the legendary guitarist’s self-titled debut with his new band, Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages. “I wasn’t really looking to put a new band together,” he tells David Robinson.
Acclaimed musician, songwriter and artist Hannah Wicklund has built her following from word of mouth and heavy touring and two impressive solo albums. Her Hell In The Hallway world tour was her biggest yet, bringing her fiery and emotional brand of blues rock to ever growing audiences. She talks to Liz Medhurst.
From Deb Ryder’s upbringing in Chicago to her West Coast heritage, differing musical styles are well in evidence on the singer’s latest album, the self-explanatory Live And Havin’ Fun. To put it all in context, Clive Richardson talked to the lady herself to better understand how her music has evolved.
Hailing from Maltby in Yorkshire, John Angus’ road to a life in music began early and has grown in a myriad of directions, from classic covers (supporting a young Aynsley Lister), to his own blues trio, running a music shop having sold his marketing business, and now fronting the John Angus Blues band, a high-energy original blues rock band. Pete Clack asks the questions.
