The veteran bluesman Walter Trout releases his 31st album Broken in March, another quality release from a man who’s weathered every storm that life has thrown at him. Simon Green speaks to the guitarist at his remote home in Denmark, a fishing village of just five hundred people situated on the North Sea coast. Having just flown in from L.A. Trout is taking a while getting used to the wet and windy Danish weather.  “I feel young,” he says, “I know I’m not, but in my head I’m still twenty-five!”

We were delighted when the busy Jo Harman found downtime from gigs and her young family to chat with fellow-musician Sean Taylor for Blues In Britain’s online YouTube series, How Musicians Work. It was a personal conversation that got to the very root of who Jo Harman is and worthy of transcribing for our February issue. Sipping tea, being her natural and authentic self, this is a compelling interview with one of Britain’s most talented singers, songwriters and performers.

The very definition of Old School Chicago Blues, and celebrating a cool fifty years since he joined the Muddy Waters Band, Bob Margolin’s latest album is simply entitled Thanks, a title that encapsulates the way many feel towards Muddy Waters himself. A guitarist steeped in Chicago Blues, the man known as Steady Rollin’ Bob talks to Blues In Britain about his time with McKinley Morganfield and much more. Steve Morphew gives thanks.

“The reason the blues is the blues, is that it’s meant to help you feel better when you’ve got the blues!” This philosophical declaration from Stevie Westwood, charismatic lead singer of Bad Touch, Norfolk’s good time rockers, sums up the band’s mission succinctly. It’s a statement that can equally be applied to their latest release, the stomping Bittersweet Satisfaction as he tells Liz Medhurst. Touch and go?

As busy as ever, Liz also caught up with 26 year-old Hannah Wicklund, the powerhouse vocalist and fierce guitar player, backstage at Wembley Arena, a few hours before she took to the stage in support of Greta Van Fleet. It’s a revealing interview: “The toxic male industry was f**king with me!” says Wicklund, an artist unafraid to call it out.

With the exception of a hiatus in the mid-late eighties, Nine Below Zero has been a constant feature on the UK blues scene and beyond since the late 1970s. As Christmas lights twinkled and the New Year beckoned, Russ Cottee spent a couple of happy hours in the company of Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham at their Southeast London nerve centre, discussing their acoustic duo release DenMark set for February. (Part Two of our feature on the South London rhythm ‘n’ blues legends).

“When I see the look on people’s faces and see they’re really listening and getting the blues of this project and the jazz of it, that’s so satisfying,” declares Sarah Brown of her Sings Mahalia Jackson show and album, on which she interprets magnificently songs like ‘Didn’t It Rain’, ‘Just A Closer Walk’, ‘Joshua’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. Trevor Hodgett listens in.

Tony Holiday was born in rural South Jordan, Utah, not an area that screams ‘blues’, but Salt Lake City was only twenty-five minutes away and that’s where Holiday’s career in music started, as he tells Pete Clack. Motel Mississippi is his latest album, out now.

PLUS: Writer John Phillpott takes a trip to Cheltenham on the footsteps of that wayward son Brian Jones, we’ve Becc’s Blues by Rebecca Downes, Reconsider Baby, A Shot Of Rhythm & Blues and your monthly album and gig reviews.
